The Pandemic and the Palestinians.

The pandemic is still an ongoing issue in Palestine, what is next with the recent Omicron variant?

Jerusalem24 –Israel on Saturday said it would ban the entry of all foreigners into the country, making it the first country to shut its borders completely in response to a new and potentially more contagious coronavirus variant, and said it would use phone-tracking technology in order to contain the spread of the Omicron variant.

Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett said in a statement that the ban, pending government approval, would last 14 days. Officials hope that within that period there will be more information on how effective COVID-19 vaccines are against Omicron, which was first detected in South Africa and has been dubbed a “variant of concern” by the World Health Organization.

On 26 November 2021, WHO designated the variant B.1.1.529 a variant of concern, named Omicron, on the advice of WHO’s Technical Advisory Group on Virus Evolution (TAG-VE).  This decision was based on the evidence presented to the TAG-VE that Omicron has several mutations that may have an impact on how it behaves, for example, on how easily it spreads or the severity of illness it causes. Here is a summary of what is currently known.

While the world rushes to figure out what is next to do regarding the COVID-19, the Palestinians themselves are having their own questions. In this episode of Wake Up Palestine, Mohammad Hamayel speaks with Dr. Ramez Dweikat from the Palestinian Ministry of Health. Dweikat discusses the situation of the Pandemic in the Palestinian territories, what do we know of the recent variant of the virus and what we should be doing to take care of ourselves.
