15-year-old girl shot and killed by Israeli army in Jenin

Jana Zakarneh was likely watching the military raid unfold from the roof of her house when she was shot four times in the head and chest.

CORRECTION: An earlier version of this article stated Jana was 16 years old. She was in fact 15.

Jerusalem24 – A Palestinian girl was shot and killed by the Israeli military during a raid on the city of Jenin in the occupied West Bank late on Sunday evening.

15-year-old Jana Zakarneh was shot four times in the head and chest while standing on the roof of her home.

Live ammunition

The Israeli military detained three Palestinians during the raid, sparking armed confrontations with Palestinian fighters from the city. Three Palestinians were injured by live ammunition and transferred to Ibn Sina Hospital in Jenin.

Sirens sounded throughout Jenin shortly after 10 PM as the military deployed special forces and reinforcements across the city, and it appears Jana went to watch the raid unfold from the roof of her house.

Her family began looking for her when they noticed her missing, and only found her around an hour after the military retreated from the city at 11 PM.

They brought her to Jenin Government Hospital where she was pronounced dead. The Ministry of Health announced her death at 12:19 AM.

Dr Mustafa Hamarsheh, Director of Jenin Government Hospital, told Jerusalem24 that Jana was shot four times with live ammunition in the face and chest.

Jana was in the eleventh grade, and is the thirty-seventh child to be shot and killed by the Israeli military in the occupied West Bank including East Jerusalem in 2022 and the second in less than a week. 16-year-old Diaa Al-Rimawi, also in the eleventh grade, was shot and killed by the Israeli military during confrontations between local youth and the Israeli army on Thursday afternoon.

Anger and mourning in Jenin

Mourners gathered in front of Jenin Government Hospital after news of Jana’s death. The factions in Jenin called for an “angry march” at dawn, and the secretary of the Fatah movement in Jenin, Atta Abu Armileh, declared a full strike in Jenin on Monday.

54 of the 153 Palestinians shot and killed by the Israeli military in the West Bank in 2022 hailed from the city of Jenin, 14 of them children, and at least 32 were not involved in direct, armed confrontations with or attacks against the Israeli army or civilians when they were shot and killed, according to documentation collected by Jerusalem24.
