19-year-old Basel Basbous confirmed alive by lawyer
UPDATE: Around 8pm last night, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas called the family of Salameh Ra’afat (who was initially reported injured and detained) to offer condolences. This would appear to confirm his death, however the Ministry of Health has yet to make any official announcements.
Jerusalem24 – The prisoners and ex-prisoners commission confirmed this afternoon to Palestine TV that 19-year-old Basel Basbous, who was reported deceased by the Israeli army yesterday morning, is in fact alive and injured.
According to lawyer Karim Ajwah who visited him, Basbous is currently being held in Shaare Zedek Medical Center in Israel.
The pro-Israeli military 0404 website which draws news from Israeli army reports reported yesterday that the Israeli army had announced the killing of two Palestinians and the injury of a third during a raid in Al-Jalazone refugee camp near Ramallah in the early hours of the morning.
WAFA news agency reported around 9.00am the death of two Palestinians whom it claimed were Basel Basbous and Khaled Anbar, quoting security sources.
General Director of the legal department in the prisoners and ex-prisoners commission, Jamal Saadeh, told Palestine TV that Ajwah, the commission’s lawyer, visited Basbous this afternoon in order to confirm the reports that he was alive that were left unsubstantiated for over 16 hours.
Ajwah stated that Basbous, who underwent surgery yesterday, was shot in his left arm and leg.
A court session is expected to be held on Thursday to extend Basbous’s detention, according to his lawyer.
A video circulating on social media showed Basbous’s family crying tears of joy after getting a call informing them that Basel was alive. The family had been holding an azza, a funeral house, to mourn their son after initial reports claimed he was dead.
The family of Salameh Ra’afat (Sharaaeh), who was initially reported injured and arrested by Israeli soldiers at the scene, hasn’t been informed yet of his condition.
Photos shared by both families show that Salameh and Basel share very similar facial features.
