Tensions soaring in Sheikh Jarrah

Jerusalem24 – For the ninth day in a row, the Israeli police continue to deploy heavily in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood of occupied Jerusalem, while Israeli Member of Knesset Itamar Ben Gveir remains in the area.

The Israeli police are erecting roadblocks in the streets and alleys in the western part of the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood. They are deploying their forces in several areas, closing off the entire perimeter of Ben Gveir’s office (a table and chair under an awning), and preventing entry into the area, except for families living in the area, and press crews who carry “Israeli cards.”

Jerusalemite Ratib Quneibi, whose bedroom window is directly across from the tent of Ben Gveir, and for a week he has been suffering from harassment and provocations. He said that “he has turned our street into a closed square, where we have difficulty getting out of it and returning to it.” He added, “in addition to the police measures, we face provocations, insults, loud music, and daily disturbances from settlers inside the outpost next to my house or at the Ben Gveir.”

The daily sit-in continues inside Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood by residents and Palestinians, who are present to protect the Palestinian homes from any attacks by settlers who storm the neighborhood.
