Israel continues to prevent committee from maintaining mosque

Jerusalem24 – The Israeli authorities continue to prevent the workers of the Hebron Reconstruction Committee from carrying out their renovations and maintenance at the Ibrahimi Mosque, which is a recognized UNESCO World Heritage site.

Imad Hamdan, Director-General of the Hebron Reconstruction Committee, said that the committee sent a letter to United Nations Education, Science, Culture Organization (UNESCO) about the challenges of preventing them from working at the Ibrahimi Mosque.

The Israeli military has prevented them from restoring, renovating and maintaining the Ibrahimi Mosque, they attacked the field staff several times and prevented the restoration team from entering the compound completely knowing full well that they are the responsible part for upkeeping the mosque.

In response to the letter, the Director-General of the World Heritage Committee at UNESCO, Lazer Assumu said that regarding the HRC’s request for emergency intervention to protect the Ibrahimi Mosque that the information provided will be taken into account when reviewing the state of the site’s conservation report at the next session of the World Heritage Committee.

He also added that this topic will be discussed with Israel’s delegate to UNESCO.
