Wake Up Palestine – Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Jerusalem24 – Wake Up Palestine – The prevalence of breast cancer has been increasing in Palestine over the past years. It is the most prevalent cancer among Palestinian women, comprising 29% of cancer diagnoses in the West Bank and 20% of those in the Gaza-Strip.

Although breast cancer is one of the cancers with the highest survival rate, success depends on early detection. Unfortunately, more than 60% of breast cancer cases in Palestine are detected at a late stage, hence reducing treatment options and the chance of survival.

October is marked as breast cancer awareness month. Starting in 1985 in the USA, by the American Cancer Society and the pharmaceutical division of Imperial Chemical Industries which is now part of AstraZeneca, (a manufacturer of several anti-breast cancer drugs). The aim of the Breast Cancer Awareness Month from the start has been to promote the mammography as the most effective weapon in the fight against breast cancer.

In this episode of Wake Up Palestine, Mohammad Hamayel speaks with Dr. Khaled Sharaf, a surgical oncologist at the Augusta Victoria Hospital in Jerusalem. Together, they discuss the importance of screening for breast cancer as well as the situation of Palestinian breast cancer patients.
