UN and Qatar Agree on mechanism for transferring Qatari grant
Jerusalem24 – An Israeli report published yesterday, stated that Qatar has reached an agreement with the United Nations to supervise the disbursement of the Qatari grant for the impoverished families sheltered in the Gaza Strip.
The agreement, reported by the Israeli Broadcasting Corporation Kan 11, stated that Qatar and the United Nations will sign, in the coming days, a final agreement on the mechanism for transferring Qatari grant funds to the Strip.
According to the official Israeli channel, the Palestinian Authority is not part of the agreement; and that the grant money will not include Hamas employees.
According to Kan11, the United Nations has waived the high percentage it had demanded in exchange for transferring the grant, which is limited to the aid allocated to poor families. The United Nations agreed to reduce its percentage from 7% to 3.5%.
The report stated that impoverished families in Gaza will be able to withdraw $100 each using ATM cards that will be activated by the United Nations and distributed to them.
The report claimed that the agreement between Qatar and the United Nations came after the Palestinian Authority failed to obtain the approval of Palestinian banks to transfer funds to Gaza, for fear of exposure to allegations of “terrorist financing.”
