Wake Up Palestine – The Press Behind Bars.

The situation of journalists in Palestine has always been difficult.

Jerusalem24 – Wake Up Palestine – Journalists in Palestine face many threats in their line of work. Among those threats is the risk of being arrested. 12 Palestinian journalists were arrested during the month of May by Israeli authorities after attempting to report the news in many “extremely stressful and dangerous” conditions. Two Palestinians – journalist Zeina Halawani and cameraman Wahbe Mikkieh – were released to house arrest after being detained by Israeli security forces during a protest in East Jerusalem’s Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood.

During the year 2020, the Palestinian Centre for Development and Media Freedoms (MADA) monitored and documented 408 violations of the media in the occupied West Bank – including East Jerusalem – and the Gaza Strip.

MADA reported that “215 violations were committed by the Israeli authorities while various Palestinian authorities committed a total of 96 violations in the West Bank and Gaza”.

In this episode of Wake Up Palestine, Mohammad Hamayel discusses the attacks against journalists during the protests in May with Shareef Haj Ali, of the Palestinian Centre for Development and Media Freedoms MADA
