Rioters break into the halls of Congress

Four dead and over 50 arrested

Jerusalem24 – Wednesday afternoon, Supporters of U.S. President Donald Trump broke into the halls of congress after a rally where Trump urged his supporters to fight against the ceremonial counting of the electoral college votes that will confirm President-elect Joe Biden’s win.

Hundreds of pro-Trump protesters pushed through barriers set up along the perimeter of Congress. 90 minutes later, police said that the demonstrators got into the building and the doors to House of Representatives and the Senate were being locked. Vice President Mike Pence was also evacuated from the chamber, where he was to preform his role in counting of the electoral college votes.

An armed standoff took place at the House front door, and police officers had their guns drawn at someone was trying to break into the chamber. A woman was also shot dead during a confrontation with DC police at congress. According to DC Police Chief, Robert Conte, three more people died during the riot due to separate medical emergencies.

DC police had arrested 52 people, four people were arrested for carrying pistols without a license and one for possession of a prohibited weapon. Mayor of Washington DC, Muriel Bowser, declared a curfew and called for everyone in the city to remain indoors.

In a press conference, Conte stated to the public “if you are not engaged in essential activities, please stay off the streets.”
