Palestinians celebrate Christmas across the Holy Land
Jerusalem24 – Christmas is not solely a Christian or religious affair in Palestine. Visit any village or city, Christian or Muslim, and you’re likely to find a tree bedecked in Christmas glories standing proudly in the town square.
Preparations began early in December with Christmas tree lighting ceremonies, concerts, parades, and Christmas markets taking place from north to south.
As for December the 25th, government employees and schoolchildren all have the day off regardless of their religious denomination. Christians may request both Christmas and Boxing Day off from their employers.
And this year, right on cue, winter weather delivered a cozily overcast, sitting-by-the-fire and blanket-grabbing atmosphere – but that did not stop the scheduled festivities from going ahead over the weekend, with scouts in Bethlehem beating their drums, pilgrims flocking to the Holy Church of the Nativity, and merchants displaying all manner of Christmas wares – to hang up on the tree, to gift to loved ones, or to whet that Christmas appetite.
Here is a selection of the best shots of Christmas 2022 in the Holy Land.
Jerusalem
The alleys of the Old City transformed into Christmas halls, drawing tourists and locals alike to their colorful array of Christmas decorations and treats.
The tree lighting ceremony took place earlier this month at Bab Al-Jadeed in the Old City of occupied East Jerusalem, delighting Jerusalemites young and old.
Nazareth
Another important city in the life of Jesus, Nazareth lights up with Christmas cheer every December.
Locals put their talents to use in honoring the holiday, and residents and tourists alike can attend a plethora of musical and celebratory events throughout the month, culminating in the Christmas Eve parade.
This year, with the scouts leading the march, Santa himself joined the parade to the delight of the youngest in attendance. The procession led to the Churches Quarter, with an address by religious leaders followed by Christmas hymns and fireworks.
Ramallah
Originally a small, Christian village, the “temporary capital” of Palestine hosts its fair share of celebratory events throughout the month of December, particularly in and around the old town where most of Ramallah’s original inhabitants – all of them Christian families – are based.
Bethlehem
And last but not least… The birthplace of Christ, the city of Bethlehem showcases the pinnacle of Christmas celebrations each year, both religious and buoyantly festive. Neighboring Beit Jala and Beit Sahour, home to the largest Christmas communities in Palestine, give the larger Bethlehem a run for its money with their own celebrations.
