17-year-old Palestinian shot and killed by Israeli forces

Jerusalem24 – Israeli forces shot and killed a Palestinian teenager this morning of the village of Kafr Dan near Jenin in the northern occupied West Bank.

17-year-old Oday Salah was shot in the head with live ammunition by Israeli forces during confrontations that erupted when the Israeli military invaded the village, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health.

Oday is the 24th Palestinian child to be shot and killed by the Israeli military in the West Bank in 2022.

Wissam Bakr, director of the Khalil Suleiman Governmental Hospital in Jenin, said that two other Palestinians were injured and hospitalized.

Local sources said that violent confrontations erupted in Kafr Dan after the Israeli forces invaded the town in large forces, one day after a shooting attack near the Jalameh checkpoint north of Jenin which resulted in the killing of an Israeli officer, as well as the two Palestinian attackers, Ahmad Abed and Abdel Rahman Abed.

Israeli forces raided the family homes of the Palestinian attackers and took measurements of the houses in preparation for their punitive demolition, a practice Israel employs in the West Bank and East Jerusalem against the families of Palestinians who attacked or attempted to attack Israeli civilians or military.

The army also arrested during their raid the cousin of one of the Jalameh attackers, Ahmad Abed.

Israel announced yesterday that it would completely shut the north West Bank checkpoints of Jalameh and Salem until further notice, after initially imposing a partial closure on Al-Jalameh yesterday, allowing Palestinian workers with a permit to enter Israel.

This has now been changed to a complete closure to both people and goods.

The residents of Kafr Dan will also be indefinitely barred from working in Israel even if they have a valid work permit, after a recommendation from the Shin Bet.

Israel has imposed similar collective punishments in the past, purportedly in order to deter attacks from the local population.

Israeli forces have now shot and killed a total of 90 Palestinians in the West Bank this year, including 24 children. This marks a sharp increase over last year’s toll of 90 Palestinians shot and killed in the West Bank for the whole of 2021, and an average of 41 during the whole Netanyahu era.

In December 2021, the Israeli military changed its rules of engagement in the occupied West Bank, explicitly allowing its soldiers to shoot-to-kill Palestinians even if they are fleeing and presenting no danger.
