Israeli police attack Walid Al-Sharif funeral

Jerusalem24- Israeli military forces attacked mourners attending the funeral for Walid Al-Sharif yesterday in occupied Jerusalem.

The Palestinian Red Crescent reported a total of 71 injuries.

Israeli security forces had released the body of Walid Al-Sharif to his family members earlier that day at the Israeli police station in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood in occupied East Jerusalem.

23-year-old Al-Sharif died last Saturday, after succumbing to wounds he sustained when Israeli forces attacked the Al-Aqsa Mosque on 22 April. He was denied first-aid for 20 minutes, leading to permanent brain damage.

The Red Crescent brought the body of Al-Sharif to Al-Makased Hospital in the town of Al-Tur. Scores of people participated in the funeral procession leading to the Mujahideen Cemetery where he was buried.

According to reporters on the ground, Israeli forces attacked the participants with stun grenades, rubber-coated steel bullets, tear gas canisters, and wastewater. The forces stormed the Mujahideen cemetery as well, physically assaulting the mourners inside.

13 people were hospitalized including two who sustained severe injuries to their eyes, including Nader Al-Sharif, Walid Al-Sharif’s uncle.

According to the official Palestinian News Agency WAFA, Israeli forces also stormed Al-Sharif’s funeral home in Wadi Al-Dam in the town of Beit Hanina, north of occupied Jerusalem.

The Palestinian Daily Newspaper, Al-Quds, reported that around 50 Palestinians were arrested by Israeli forces in Jerusalem, most of them in Beit Hanina. One of the people arrested was Omar Khadair, a pallbearer in Shireen Abu Akleh’s funeral.
