The Political Life of Palestinians in Israel

A Palestinian speaks about his experiences as a member of Knesset.

Jerusalem24 – According to the Israel Central Bureau of Statistics, in 2019 1,890,000 Palestinians were living in Israel, representing 21% of Israel’s population.

This figure includes 209,000 Palestinians in occupied Jerusalem.

These Palestinians live under the Israeli government, represented by two main blocs, the Islamist United Arab List which made headlines when it became the first Arab party to participate in an Israeli government, and the Joint Arab List.

Joint List party leader Ayman Odeh speaks in a video in which he calls on Arab Israeli officers to quit the security forces, saying they ‘humiliate’ their people on April 10, 2022 (Screencapture/Facebook)

When the head of the Joint List Party Ayman Odeh visited Jerusalem and spoke to some of the Palestinians living there. Learning of issues the Palestinians in the city faced, Odeh posted a video on Facebook. In the video, he called on Palestinians serving in the Israeli security and military in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem to throw down their weapons.

Several members of the Knesset attacked Odeh for the remarks in his video. However, some allies in the Joint Arab List stood by his side regardless. In an interview, MK Sami Abou Shehadeh, spoke in Odeh’s defense stating that: “This has been the general historic position of the Arabs.”

In this episode of Wake-Up Palestine, Sami Abou Shehadeh, a member of the Knesset in the Joint Arab List explains what it is to be in the Israeli Knesset, the situation on the brink of the Israeli government’s collapse, and the position of the Palestinians inside and outside of the Knesset in all of this.
