Jerusalem24 – Community led-action is a way organizations aid and give a much bigger say to individuals and communities affected by crisis to decide on what they need the most, Supporting communities and allowing them to implement projects themselves.
Since November 2015, the DanChurchAid / Norwegian Church Aid (DCA/NCA) Joint Country Programme in Palestine (JCPP) with the support of the Church of Sweden and other donors has applied a Community Led Action (CLA) approach to enhance the resilience of Palestinian communities.
The work was initiated in partnership with Young Men’s Christian Association – Women Development Programme (YMCA-WDP) to create an enabling environment for inclusive, participatory, and accountable collective action at the community level in the West Bank.
“When introduced to the project’s scope and goals, many communities were skeptical and hesitant of it, especially since they were used to Non-Governmental Organizations that ignored the community’s members and focused on risks and priorities assessed by outsider stakeholders mostly”, said Nils Carstensen, adviser to DCA.
The project team worked diligently with community members to fully explain the concept of community-led planning and interventions, with emphasis on the representation and participation of members from all societal groups. As communities better understood the approach, they realized the necessity of their involvement in their own local progress and growth. Many community members, specifically women, shared with the project team that this project was an opportunity for them to cultivate their confidence, leadership, purpose, and sense of responsibility.
