“My dress… my history”… A social media campaign
We wanted everyone to know that the Thobe is originally Palestinian, we had women from Gaza sewing them
Jerusalem24 – Last December, participants in the beauty pageant, Miss Universe; which was held in occupied Palestine, appeared wearing the Palestinian dress while preparing traditional Palestinian dishes, in yet another attempt of claiming the Palestinian heritage as an Israeli.
Falistini TV – a channel and a group of artistic digital platforms that sets the definition of Palestine and its heritage as a goal – launched in response to Israel’s attempt to steal the Palestinian dress, “Thobi Tarikhi – ثوبي-تاريخي” campaign.
“My dress… my history – Thobi Tarikhi” campaign coordinator Sumaya Sooqi, talked with Jerusalem24, about the importance of fighting the Israeli theft. Saying “This campaign was launched to shed light on the Palestinian heritage, and was designed to stand against the continuous attempts of stealing Palestinian identity”.
The campaign started on February 17th and for 10 days, fighting and resisting the theft of the Palestinian traditional dress and food, and aiming to create a social media wave, through hashtags and informative content shared by media personalities, influencers, activists, actresses, Palestinian and non-Palestinians. “We wanted everyone to know that the Thobe is originally Palestinian, and we had women from Gaza sewing the thobes we sent to the influencers,” Sumaya said.
Sumaya adds that Falastini TV works on different campaigns to reclaim the ownership of the Palestinian heritage, and spread awareness about Palestinian traditions and identity. “The conflict of the ownership of the land has been going on for many years, but recently there were a couple of incidents that remind us how Israel is always trying to steal the Palestinian identity and heritage. Our thobe is the weapon we use against all these attempts”.
